Gloryhunting in England: Drei Tage, drei Spitzenspiele.

England, 9. Liga – und wir Erfolgsfans mittendrin.

Glory hunting in England: Three days, three top matches.

It started with visiting Colne FC (already well known and valued to us) who play the Premier Division of the North West Counties Football League. The Premier Division is one of 14 leagues in the ninth stage of the English pyramid system; the ninth stage is an exception in view of the fact that it is the only league stage where exclusively the champion wins promotion, while there are not even playoffs for the runners-up.

So tension was guaranteed when Colne (in second) hosted third-placed ‘coalminers’ from Atherton. It may be doubted that the visiting team really worked long and hard underground this Thursday; instead they started as if they were from the Fire Brigade! The Colls dominated the hosts on the sloping ground and at half-time could have had a higher lead than 1:0. But they hadn’t.

The second half did not see Colne creating compelling chances neither while the guests did their job with routine, but lacking determination. The match got a bit dreary, so instead of paying too much attention to it we turned to listening to our English friends talking – listening to English people talk about football is always a pleasure -, then I started walking round the ground for a bit, while the others bought a round of beer, there was also time to go to the toilet… but then!!…

… two referee decisions brought the spectators to the barricades and Colne FC back into the game.

Because, when he spoke out two dismissals for the hosts in the 67th and 72th minute, for an alleged assault and an alleged foul as last man, the Red Army started freaking out! Our mates Paul, Bob and Andy could barely be slowed down, they couldn’t fuckin‘ believe what they witnessed, have you fuckin‘ seen this?, he barely fuckin’ touched him, just a little fuckin‘ caress, the fuckin‚ referee, the fuckin‚ linesman, this fuckin‘ actor of a player, these fuckin‚ fuckers, this is a fuckin‘ cheat! Cheat cheat cheat!

And suddenly the Reds played as if they were running for their lives, suddenly they were the Fire Brigade, a nine-man fire brigade and it was burning all around, especially in the Atherton half of the pitch, and when they scored the 1:1 equalizer all barriers broke down, we didn’t really know what was going on here, and then all of a sudden Andy Short, almost 60 years of age, hopped over the barrier as if he was a young gazelle and joined the hustle and bustle celebrating the goal in the six-yard box. Scenes for a movie, and certainly a fantastic start to our England vacation. I’d rather not imagine what would have happened if Colne had not let slip this one tremendous opportunity they had in injury time…

That’s football, that’s passion, this is a wonderful club, this was another great experience. England, Ninth League – with us, the glory hunters, in the middle of it all.
